Lisa Retief founded Sadalbari in 2001 as an outlet for her passion for development and open source. Sadalbari is a star in the Pegasus constellation. According to Zakariya al-Kazwini, the 13th-century Persian author, it refers to "the good luck of the camel seeking pasture".
